Hendersonville, the seat of Henderson County in the Blue Ridge foothills of western North Carolina, was in 1911 a mix of farm town and summer retreat. Apple orchards gave the county much of its income, and the crop moved out by rail after the line reached the town in the late 1870s. The mild climate and mountain air also drew visitors seeking rest or relief from the lowland heat, and hotels and boarding houses catered to them through the warm months. Kanuga Lake, a few miles from town, was one of the scenic spots that outsiders came to see and that local residents counted among the area's attractions. The lake and its surroundings reflected a community that depended on fruit, tourism, and the railroad to keep its economy running.
