Lake Toxaway sat in the mountains of Transylvania County, North Carolina, where a dam on the Toxaway River had created a lake of several hundred acres in the early 1900s. By 1911 the resort community around it was drawing wealthy summer visitors from Southern cities and beyond, who came to escape the lowland heat and stay in the large hotel and its cottages. The place was a product of the resort boom that followed the arrival of rail lines into the mountain counties, and its guests traveled by train to nearby stations before the last stretch by road. Locals known to the visitors came to depend on the seasonal trade for work as servants, guides, and builders, and Lake Toxaway was for many people in the region the name of a summer retreat rather than a farming settlement. That character ended abruptly in 1916, when the dam gave way and the lake drained into the valley below.
