Tryon, a small town in Polk County in the foothills of western North Carolina, was in 1911 known mainly as a mountain resort, where summer visitors from the Carolina lowcountry and Georgia came to escape the heat. The railroad that carried guests and freight up from the Piedmont shaped its growth, and hotels, boarding houses, and services for vacationers formed much of the local economy alongside farming and timber in the surrounding valleys. Civic life centered on the town government, churches, and the seasonal households who returned year after year. To residents, Tryon was a quiet, genteel place set among hills along the Pacolet River, far removed from the textile mills then expanding across the Piedmont to the east.
