Hendersonville, the seat of Henderson County in the Blue Ridge foothills of western North Carolina, was in 1911 a town built on apples and summer visitors. Orchards covered the surrounding valleys, and growers shipped their fruit by rail to markets well beyond the mountains. The cool elevation also drew vacationers and health-seekers from the lowcountry and from cities farther south, so boarding houses and hotels filled up each season. Local life centered on the courthouse square and the commercial blocks along Main Street, where merchants relied on both the farm families and the seasonal crowd.
