Tryon, in Polk County at the edge of the foothills near the South Carolina line, was in 1911 a town that depended in part on visitors. Its mild climate and mountain air had drawn winter and summer guests from the Carolina low country and from farther north, and hotels and boarding houses catered to them, served by the railroad that brought them in. Local life also rested on farming, timber, and the small mills and shops that supplied the surrounding countryside. Residents of a town that changed its character with the seasons knew it as a place of rest and fresh air as much as a market town, and that reputation shaped its streets and its economy for years afterward.
