Pack Square in Asheville, North Carolina, was the commercial and civic heart of the mountain city in 1910. Asheville had grown on its reputation as a health resort, drawing visitors who came for the mountain air, and the hotels, boarding houses, and shops around the square catered to them as well as to local residents. The Southern Railway linked the city to the wider region, carrying tourists, freight, and the timber and agricultural goods of the surrounding counties. Pack Square was also where people gathered for business, court days, and public events, so the buildings around it reflected a town that depended on both its visitors and its legal and commercial life.
