Cloudland Hotel, perched near 6,000 feet on the Roan Mountain highlands at the North Carolina and Tennessee line, was in 1914 one of the best-known summer resorts in the southern mountains. Families from the Carolina and Georgia lowlands rode trains to the foot of the mountain and then climbed by carriage or rail spur to escape heat and fever season, spending weeks in hotel rooms and on the porches overlooking the valleys. The surrounding country was also tied to industry: timber cutting and iron and mica mining drew capital and workers into the mountain counties, even as the grand summer hotel trade set the rhythm of life on the peak. The Roan's famous rhododendron and balsam slopes gave visitors their reason for coming, and the hotel was the social center where those summer guests met, dined, and danced.
