Camp Glenn, on the Carteret County coast near Morehead City, North Carolina, was a state training ground where militia and reserve units drilled each summer. In 1915, the photograph shows naval reserve men gathered at the camp, a sign of the preparedness debate that spread through the country after war broke out in Europe in 1914. Morehead City was then a small port at the end of a rail line from the interior, and its waterfront handled fish, lumber, and naval stores, while nearby Beaufort was the older town across the sound. The camp drew visitors from inland towns, who came to watch drills and parades and to see sailors and soldiers encamped by the water. For local people, the place meant summer activity, the coast's shipping economy, and growing attention to national defense.
