Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1918 was a fast-growing textile and railroad city of roughly 40,000 people, and the war had turned its outskirts into a military town. Camp Greene, established in 1917 on the southwest side of the city, was one of the large National Army cantonments built to train draftees for service in France, and it housed tens of thousands of soldiers at its peak. The camp brought new payrolls, rail traffic and crowded boarding houses to a city that had long been known for its mills and its banks. Its troops trained through a winter of influenza and pneumonia that struck the cantonment hard, and the camp's presence left a lasting mark on how Charlotte saw itself as a place tied to national events.
