Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1918 was a river port on the Cape Fear, shipping naval stores, lumber, cotton, and tobacco out through its harbor while the city's cotton mills and shipyards gave work to a large share of its residents. The First World War had made the port more important, and the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line railroads carried freight and passengers through town toward the coast and the interior. Wilmington was also a segregated city, with a large Black population whose churches, schools, and businesses formed a dense community of their own, and the racial hierarchy of the era shaped its civic life. Residents of 1918 knew the town as the largest city in the state's east, a place where the river, the rail yards, and the wharves set the rhythm of daily work.
