Camp Greene, on the outskirts of Charlotte, North Carolina, was built in 1917 as the United States entered the First World War, and the 41st Division was organized there that summer from National Guard units drawn largely from western states. The division took the nickname "Sunset Division" from those western origins. Charlotte was a textile and railroad city then, with cotton mills along its edges and the Southern Railway lines giving it reach across the Piedmont. The camp brought thousands of soldiers, along with the construction crews, merchants, and visitors that came with them, into a city that had long measured its prosperity by the cotton trade. Local residents would have known the camp as a sudden new neighbor, bringing parades, drilling fields, and the constant traffic of troops moving toward training and, soon, overseas service.
