Greenville, South Carolina, in 1917 was a Piedmont town of mills, churches and a compact downtown along the Reedy River, and that year the army laid out Camp Sevier on its edge. The camp took its name from John Sevier, the frontiersman and first governor of Tennessee. Local merchants and farmers suddenly had to supply lumber, feed, bread and milk for a large body of men arriving all at once. Residents remembered the spring and summer of 1917 as a time when the war brought uniforms, rumors and new routines into ordinary streets. After the armistice the camp was emptied, and the town was left to sort out what the wartime boom had built and what it had cost.
