Camp Sevier, shown here in 1917, was a wartime training cantonment on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, a city built on textile mills and the cotton economy of the Piedmont. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and the Army chose the site to train the 30th Division, a National Guard formation drawn from units in the Carolinas and Tennessee. The camp brought thousands of soldiers, contractors and civilian workers into a town that had known mostly mill work and the rhythm of its railroad lines. Greenville residents watched the rows of new barracks rise and the drilling fields fill, and they came to see the camp as a sudden center of local life, shaping both the town's economy and its sense of its place in the war effort.
