Camp Glenn, North Carolina, in 1916 was a state National Guard training ground near Morehead City on the Carteret County coast. The camp was set up during the spring of 1916, when the border crisis with Mexico after Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, pushed Guard units into intensive drilling. Morehead City was then a small seaport at the end of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad, with its economy built on shipping, fishing, and lumber moving out through Beaufort Harbor and Bogue Sound. Soldiers camped in rows of tents on the sandy pine flats, and the nearby town saw an influx of visitors and business from the troops. The photograph records that temporary encampment at a moment when the nation's attention was fixed on the southern border.
