Concord, New Hampshire, in 1910 was still the state capital, and its economy ran on state government, the rail yards where several lines met, and the shops and mills along the Merrimack. Electric street cars had by then replaced many horse-drawn lines, and downtown Main Street served shoppers from the surrounding farm towns of Merrimack and Hillsborough counties. Penacook, across the river, kept its paper and woolen mills running, and many of its workers were French-Canadian and Irish families who had come to New England for mill jobs. The city was a quieter place than the big mill centers to the south such as Manchester, and residents tended to know it as the place where the legislature met and where the trains to Boston and Montreal stopped.
