Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1903 was one of the largest textile cities in the country, and its economy rested on the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, whose mills lined the Merrimack River. The river's falls had powered industry since the 1830s, and the company's brick mill buildings and canal system made the city a major producer of cotton cloth and machinery. Immigrants from French Canada, Ireland, and Greece, along with many young women from farms across New England, filled the mill workforce, and the population had grown rapidly over the preceding decades. Railroads carried raw cotton in and finished goods out, tying the city to Boston and wider markets. The mills dominated daily life, setting the rhythm of shifts, neighborhoods, and church and parish communities across the city.
