Gregg Lake, seen from Holt Hill in New Hampshire in 1913, lay in a state where water power and railroads had long shaped daily life. Textile mills along the Merrimack and Salmon Falls rivers employed many workers, and the Boston and Maine Railroad carried mill goods out and city visitors into the countryside. Hill-town farms were slowly giving way to summer cottages as families from Boston and other cities rented and bought lakeshore land. Local residents would have known the lakes for ice cutting, fishing, and the summer camps that drew visitors each July and August. The decade also brought automobiles onto rural roads, gradually widening how far people could travel for work or church.
