In 1913, New Hampshire was a state of contrasts. Its river valleys held textile mills and shoe and machine shops, while its hill country was losing farms to the mill towns and the West. Many rural lakes had become summer retreats, where families from Boston, Lowell, and other cities rented cottages and boarding houses and arrived by the Boston & Maine Railroad and its branch lines. Summer visitors to places like Gregg Lake came for swimming, boating, and the cool air, and local people often depended on that seasonal trade to make ends meet. This photograph of Gregg Lake, taken from Spruce Knoll by E. D. Putnam, shows the wooded shoreline the state's summer business was built on.
