Lake Sunapee, photographed from the Burkehaven shore in Newbury, New Hampshire, in 1908, was becoming a summer destination as much as a farming district. Hill farms and small sawmills had long worked the surrounding countryside, but by the turn of the century boarding houses and cottages had multiplied along the water, drawing city families from Massachusetts and other parts of New England for the July and August season. Steamboats carried passengers and freight between landings around the lake, and visitors who arrived by rail at nearby stations finished their trip by road or by boat. Residents knew the summer months as the time when their incomes rose and their roads and wharves filled with strangers, and the cottage colonies were already beginning to change who owned the shore and how it was used.
