Hunters Quay, on the Firth of Clyde across from Dunoon, was a steamer landing for holidaymakers heading to the Cowal coast, and the Royal Marine Hotel stood there as the grand place to stay. The image is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that used photographic negatives and hand-applied color to produce a painterly finish. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in America, so the print offers a glimpse of a Scottish seaside resort as travelers of the 1890s would have encountered it, with its hotel and waterfront set against the Clyde.
