Dumfries's Station Hotel stood beside the town's railway station, so it would have served travelers arriving by train as well as local people, which helps explain why it belongs on a board about taverns. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that built up color by applying several hand-registered stone plates over a photographic base, giving the scene the soft, painted look that tourists prized in the 1890s. Detroit Publishing Co. issued this copy under its American license for the process, and its 1905 catalog listing places it among many Scottish views sold to visitors and armchair travelers alike.
