The record places this view at Loch Awe in Argyll, Scotland, with the mountain Ben Lui rising in the distance beyond a hotel on the shore. The print is a photochrom, a process that began in Switzerland and was later used by the Detroit Publishing Company to turn black-and-white photographs into color prints through a series of hand-prepared lithographic stones. Detroit's catalog, dated 1905, offered many scenes of Scottish landscapes and buildings, and the photograph was likely made in the 1890s, when the company's photochrom views were in wide circulation. Its tinted surface gives a sense of how travelers and armchair tourists once pictured Scotland's lochs and hills.
