Few places in Venice were more associated with the arriving traveler than the Hotel Bauer Grünwald, which stood on the Grand Canal within easy reach of Piazza San Marco. This photochrom print shows the hotel as tourists of the 1890s would have seen it from the water, when steamers and gondolas carried visitors to its doors. The process was a early color technique in which several lithographic stones were hand-tinted from a black-and-white photograph, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers through its catalogues. Its numbered catalog J, dated 1905, places this print in that later marketing effort.
