Hotel Dalen stood in the village of Dalen in Telemark, where travelers passed between lake and valley routes on their way into the region's scenery. The Detroit Publishing Company included this photochrom view in its 1905 catalog of Norwegian scenes, and the process layered several lithographic stones over a photograph to give it soft, painted color. Such prints were sold to travelers and armchair tourists, and a hotel like this one shows how visitors were housed in the late 1800s. A hotel of this kind was also a social gathering place, not just a place to sleep.
