Tvindefos, the waterfall that drops near the hotel on the Hardanger Fjord, sets this view apart from other scenes of Norwegian coast and mountain. Hardanger drew steamship travelers through the late nineteenth century, and inns like this one served visitors who came to see its falls and fjord scenery. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that layered several lithographic stones, each inked in a different hue, over a photographic key image. Detroit Publishing Company later issued such views in America, and this example appears in its 1905 catalog as print number 7038.
