Framnæs Hotel stands beside the lake at Opheim, on the Hardanger Fjord in western Norway, a region that drew steady numbers of travelers during the 1890s. Hotels like this one served visitors who arrived by steamer to see the fjord scenery and often stayed for days at a time. The picture was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photochrom prints made from a Swiss process that built up color from several inked stone plates, giving the scene its soft, painted look. Its listing in the company's 1905 catalog shows how such views reached both travelers and buyers who had never seen Norway.
