The Stalheim Hotel stands on a ledge above the Nærøy valley, where the road from Voss drops steeply toward the Hardanger Fjord. This photochrom print, issued by the Detroit Publishing Company and listed in its 1905 catalog, presents the hotel as a destination in its own right, with the valley spread out below. The photochrom process built its color from several stone lithographs printed over a single photograph, which gives the greens and fjord water a painted softness. Hotels like Stalheim catered to tourists touring the fjords, which explains why a hotel appears among a set of landscape views.
