The Vinge Hotel sat on the Hardangerfjord in western Norway, and this view presents it as a waterside stop for travelers. The image is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that built color from several stone lithographic plates printed over a photograph. Detroit Publishing Co. later sold such views in America, and this one appears as number 7047 in the firm's 1905 catalog. Fjord hotels of the 1890s catered to steamer passengers and visitors drawn to the region's waterfalls and mountain scenery, which helps explain why such scenes were so popular with buyers far from Norway.
