Svolvær, a fishing port on the island of Austvågøy in the Lofoten archipelago, is the place named here, and the Hotel Lofoten is the landmark that sets this view apart. The print is a photochrom, a Swiss color process that the Detroit Photographic Company, later known as the Detroit Publishing Co., distributed in America. Its catalog entry dates to 1905 and gives the print number 7143. Steamship routes along the Norwegian coast brought more visitors to Lofoten in the 1890s, which makes the hotel a useful sign of that growing tourism. The soft, painterly color comes from several stone impressions laid over one another.
