The Station Hotel stood in Ayr, a seaside town on Scotland's southwest coast, and its name points to its purpose: like many Victorian railway-town hotels, it was built to serve travelers arriving by train. This photochrom print comes from a series of color views of Scottish landscapes and buildings that the Photochrom Company of London produced in the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, sold these views in the United States and listed them in its 1905 catalog. The print's glossy color and close detail show how the process was used to market Scotland to tourists.
