The Hôtel des Anglais in Nice was one of the grand hotels that served the winter visitors who arrived on the French Riviera in the late nineteenth century, many of them from Britain, which gave the hotel its name. This photochrom print shows it in the color process that Detroit Publishing Co. sold in the United States, which built each image from several lithographic stones and was hand-finished for a soft, painted look. The record dates the print to between about 1890 and 1900, and it appears in the company's 1905 catalog of Riviera views. Although the gallery board files it under taverns and saloons, the picture is better understood as a record of resort travel and the hotel trade.
