Few seaside hotels in Britain were as grand as the Scarborough Grand Hotel, which overlooks the North Sea on the Yorkshire coast. Built in the 1860s as Scarborough grew into a fashionable resort, it catered to visitors who arrived by rail to take the sea air. This view is a photochrom, an early color process that combined photography with hand-worked printing stones. Detroit Publishing Company later included it in its 1905 catalog of English views, offering American buyers a glimpse of Victorian seaside life.
