Ullswater, the second-largest lake in the English Lake District, stretches past the village of Patterdale here, with a hotel set on its shore. The Photochrom process used to make the picture was developed in Switzerland around 1890, and it transferred hand-retouched color onto lithographic stones to produce vivid reproductions of scenic views. Detroit Publishing Co. issued this print in its 1905 catalog of English views, which sold travel scenes to a public eager for images of distant places. Inns and hotels like this one were common gathering places for walkers and travelers returning from the surrounding fells.
