Tunbridge Wells, a spa town in Kent, grew fashionable in the 1700s after visitors came for its mineral springs. This color view of the Wellington Hotel was made by the photochrom process, a method developed in Switzerland that combined photography with multiple printing stones to produce colored travel views, which sold widely in the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held rights to the process in the United States, issued this print, listed as number 11273 in its 1905 catalog of English views.
