Looking down from Capstone Hill, this view takes in the harbor town of Ilfracombe on the north coast of Devon and the hotels that lined its seafront. The town grew into a popular seaside resort in the later 19th century, helped by a railway link that opened in 1874 and brought visitors from inland towns and cities. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland and printed in large runs. The Detroit Publishing Company sold this version in the United States, listing it in its 1905 catalog of English views, and the hotels in the frame show the holiday trade that drove the town's growth.
