Ryde's waterfront is the focus of this view, where hotels and horse-drawn coaches waited for travelers arriving by steamer from the mainland. In the late nineteenth century Ryde became a fashionable seaside resort, and visitors who landed there often continued inland by coach to other parts of the island. The image was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photography with lithographic color printing. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in the United States, and it appeared in a 1905 catalog of English views.
