Hotels line the water in this view of the inland harbor at Büsum, a fishing and seaside town on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. The photochrom process, developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in the 1880s, produced color prints that were widely sold to travelers and armchair tourists in the 1890s. Its colors were added to a black-and-white photographic base, so the blues, greens, and reds here reflect the printer's palette more than the scene as it looked. Hotels and inns near a working harbor like this one often served fishermen, traders, and visitors arriving by boat.
