Wading figures at the edge of the North Sea give this view its character, and the scene is set at Büsum, a small coastal town in Schleswig-Holstein. The shoreline there is flat, and the tide pulls back a long way over sand and mud, so people often walked and waded through shallow water. This photochrom print dates from about the 1890s, when the Zürich firm Photoglob produced colored views like this one for travelers and collectors. Its soft, layered color shows the seaside leisure that was growing in popularity across Germany at the time.
