Few shorelines in northwestern Germany look as open as the broad, sandy strand shown here on Borkum, the largest of the East Frisian islands in the North Sea. The island grew into a seaside resort in the later 1800s, when visitors came for sea air and bathing and the beach became a place for walking and leisure. The picture is a photochrom, a color process that built up an image from several hand-prepared stone plates, and the Detroit Publishing Company included it in its 1905 catalog of German views. Its date is recorded only as falling between about 1890 and 1900.
