Kolberg, a Baltic seaside resort in Pomerania, is now Kołobrzeg in western Poland, and this view records its beach when the town was still part of Germany. The print is a photochrom, a color process in which several lithographic stones were inked in succession from a single photograph, giving sand, water, and sky a soft, painted quality. Detroit Publishing Co. listed it in its 1905 catalog as part of a large set of German views, and the record dates the original photograph to roughly the 1890s.
