Warnemünde, a port at the mouth of the Warnow River on Germany's Baltic coast, is the setting here, with its sandy beach and the west mole stretching out toward the sea. Photochrom prints like this one came from a Swiss process that combined photography with hand-applied color, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold them in the United States as views of Germany. The picture dates from roughly the 1890s, when Warnemünde was developing into a seaside resort that drew visitors from inland towns. Its catalog entry marks it as part of the company's German series.
