Lake Worth, the long freshwater lagoon separating the mainland from the barrier island, is the focus of this 1907 map, which shows West Palm Beach on the western shore and Palm Beach on the narrow strip of land to the east. Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway reached the area in 1894, the same year Flagler opened the Royal Poinciana Hotel on the island, and the two communities grew quickly as winter destinations for wealthy northern visitors. A "places of interest" map like this one was a practical guide for tourists, marking hotels, landings, and the waterways that linked the two shores.
