Fish Lake Beach in Utah is the place this stereograph records, photographed in 1872 during Lieut. George M. Wheeler's federal survey of the territory west of the 100th meridian. The card belongs to that expedition's Geological Series, so its purpose was partly scientific documentation of the land. Its paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave nineteenth-century audiences a sense of depth and made distant landscapes feel close. The card was published by William Isaac Marshall, a photographer also known for his Yosemite views, which the catalog lists as a related subject.
