Most early war camp photographs show inland fields and tents, so a encampment set on a beach, dated 1861, stands apart in this collection. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates before the emulsion dried, which made field work a matter of portable darkrooms and careful timing. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, who worked with Mathew Brady before going out on his own, though that attribution has since been revised. Its date places it in the first year of the war, when many units were still forming and living in temporary camps.
