A federal camp set up on a beach in 1861 is the subject here, recorded on two glass plates that form the left and right halves of a stereograph pair. Stereo views like this were made to be seen through a viewer that gave the scene depth, and they sold widely to Americans following the war at home. The wet collodion process behind the negatives required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate before it dried, which made field work in the war's first year demanding. The Library of Congress once credited the pair to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been revised.
