A Union encampment set on a beach is an unusual subject for the early months of the Civil War, and this picture survives as two glass plates that together form a stereograph pair, one for each eye. Made in 1861 with the wet collodion process, the negatives had to be exposed and developed while still damp, which made field photography slow and demanding. The pair was once credited to Alexander Gardner (1821-1882), a prominent Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been revised. Stereographs like this were widely sold and viewed through a stereoscope, giving viewers at home a sense of depth in army camp life.
