Shown here is the beach at Llandudno, the north Wales resort town, a view framed by the sands rather than the streets. Llandudno grew popular with holidaymakers in the later nineteenth century, after rail links reached it. The picture is a photochrom, an early color process in which several stone plates were printed in succession and often tinted by hand, which gives the scene its soft, painted tone. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in a catalog of Welsh views, making it a useful record of how a Victorian seaside holiday looked.
