A stereograph card from 1900 places viewers on the beach at Mayagüez, the port city on Puerto Rico's western coast, with palms framing the shoreline. The card's copyright note names John Rogers, the American sculptor known for his popular plaster figure groups, who held the copyright claim on the image. Stereographs like this were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional scene. The island had recently come under United States control after the Spanish-American War, and cards such as this one gave mainland American audiences a glimpse of newly acquired territory.
