This view of Southsea beach captures the shingle and seafront of the resort district beside Portsmouth on England's south coast. By the 1890s Southsea was a fashionable seaside town, and its promenade drew holidaymakers out for a stroll by the water. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s, and the Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in its 1905 catalog of English views. Its soft, saturated tones show how such resorts were presented to American audiences at the turn of the century.
