Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man, was a popular Victorian seaside resort in the Irish Sea, and this view shows its broad bay and beach. The print is a photochrom, made by a process developed in Switzerland that transferred a photograph onto several stone lithographic plates, each inked with a different color. Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog under England, though the island is a self-governing Crown dependency rather than part of England.
